In Famagusta city of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), 46-year-old Muhammet Gökmen declared that a house was for sale without the knowledge of its owner and sold it to Durcan Sabancı for 260 thousand liras. Gökmen disappeared, saying that he would inform the house after receiving the money. Durcan went to Famagusta Land Registry Office to get the title deed of the house. However, when the officials at the land registry said that the title deed was not transferred in his name for such a house, he realized that he was defrauded.
Having reached the fraudster who sold someone else’s house for 260 thousand liras to him, Durcan asked for his money back. Suspect Gökmen returned only 50 thousand liras from the 260 thousand lira he received from Sabanci. Sabancı filed a criminal complaint to the police when she could not get the remaining money.
Muhammet Gökmen, who was taken into custody by the police upon the complaint, was taken to the Famagusta District Court on the charge of “providing money by fraud”. Gökmen stated that he did such a thing on the grounds that he had financial difficulties in the court and that he spent the money he received from Durcan for his debts. The court ordered that Gökmen be detained for 1 day in the police for investigation. The police investigation into the incident continues.
