According to the information compiled from the data of the General Directorate of Meteorology, the average rainfall in January for many years in the region was 76.2 millimeters. 76.2 millimeters of rainfall fell in the region in January last year.
In the same period of this year, 160 millimeters of rainfall was seen in the region. Thus, it was calculated that the precipitation in the Marmara Region increased by more than 100 percent compared to the January precipitation of the previous year.
In January, the precipitation increased in the entire Marmara Region, while the second highest January precipitation in the last 40 years was seen in the region.
“THE CAUSE OF RAINING IS THE ATMOSPHERIC RIVER”
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Ömer Lütfi Şen, in his statement, said that the precipitation increased in the Marmara Region in January.
Stating that rainfall in the region decreased considerably before this, Şen said, “The reason for the precipitation that occurred in the Marmara Region at the beginning of January and was effective in breaking the drought at a high quality rate is related to the atmospheric river.” said.
Şen reported that the serial jet stream that carries the humid and warm air of the tropics to the middle and upper latitudes at thousands of kilometers are atmospheric rivers.
Noting that a typical atmospheric river formed on the ocean can carry much more water than the Amazon, Prof. Dr. Şen said, “In January, the atmospheric river, which affected the Marmara Region, carried the moisture it received from the Atlantic Ocean off Mauritania and Senegal to the region over the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, causing heavy rainfall.” he spoke.
Şen said that the length of this river to draw water from the tropics is related to the increase in the amplitude of the waves in the atmosphere.
Emphasizing that this situation occurs more when the arctic oscillation is in the negative phase, Şen said, “In the last months of the last year, the arctic oscillation remained in the positive phase and there was not enough rainfall because there were not large waves. Estimates are that this situation will continue in the near term. ” made its evaluation.
“THE SOIL IS DRY THE GROUND IS READY FOR FLOOD AND FLOOD EVENTS”
Prof. Dr. Şen stated that heavy rains generally occur in the periods following severe dry periods.
Stating that climates are released from one extreme to another as in pendulums, Şen said, “Both heavy rainfall and dryness of the soil prepare the ground for floods and overflows. For this reason, being prepared for such times is of high quality in terms of reducing loss of life and property.” found the evaluation.
