Noting that a typical atmospheric river formed on the ocean can carry much more water than the Amazon, Prof. Dr. Şen said, “In January, the atmospheric river, which affected the Marmara Region, carried the moisture it received from the Atlantic Ocean off Mauritania and Senegal to the region over the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, causing heavy rainfall.” he spoke.

Şen said that the length of this river to draw water from the tropics is related to the increase in the amplitude of the waves in the atmosphere.

Emphasizing that this situation occurs more when the arctic oscillation is in the negative phase, Şen said, “In the last months of the last year, the arctic oscillation remained in the positive phase and there was not enough rainfall because there were not large waves. Estimates are that this situation will continue in the near term. ” made its evaluation.
